This is the music video to the song 'Yonkers' by the alternative hip-hop artist called Tyler, The Creator. It's directed by a character called Wolf Haley who is the artists alter ego. Yonkers uses a wide range of technical features, promoting the 'stars image', personality and beliefs.
Yonkers is separated into three versus separated by the backing instrumental acting as the chorus which in juxtaposition to the dark lyrical content. The Synaesthesia is this video is very weak, as none of the lyrics are physically shown in the video. Tyler lip sync's the lyrics all throughout the song making the lyrics come out his mouth visual. Despite this his emotion of anger is shown though aggressive body language and facial expressions.
In this video the stars image in very conventional, a typical artist would not portray the image Tyler is projecting . It's very abnormal in a music video for a 'star' to show the audience them eating a cockroach and vomiting and then concluding into him hanging himself; this connotes Tyler's personality as very rebellious and defiant, this also mirrors the lyrics in the song as he expresses strong opinions and insubordinated attitude. Tyler's image in the video is fairly normal however he does have the word 'kill' written on his hand, the again fits in with the hellish mood created. The use of eye contacts are also used to create a devilish look.
The cinematography in this video is very basic yet effective, the predominate shot is a mid-close up to the performance while a series of focus pulls changes the depth of field causing him to blur adding emphasis on the instrumental. Additionally the mise en scene is very simple consisting of a white background and a stool he's sat on, this symbolises the importance of the lyrics instead of a glamorised video. Editing wise, the performer is in grey scale but them faded to black when distasteful thing's happen such as him vomiting and hanging himself, secluding the audience from his discomfit. An average music has fifty shot per minute however this as two, this empathises the flow of the track. This video would be described as a disjucture, but personally I would argue it as a illustrate. As the genre can be described as 'horrorcore' therefore a illustrate the tone of the music. Distressing scenes such as an hanging and vomiting amplifying his wild image and dark lyrics.
Skepta is a Uk grime artist for has recently found success in the mainstream charts, This is the music video to the song 'Amnesia'. The song is about reminiscing a drunken night out in Ibiza. The song is constructed though two man versus, a main chorus and a hook.

The song is based on a story so lots of images have been emerged from the process of synaesthesia, the images on the video act as a visual images the lyrics are used as a narrative. The first scene begins in a hotel room, several things have been recreated visually. The lyrics 'When I woke up I found a note that said sorry I had to go ily' have been visually created by him finding a note saying 'sorry I had to go ily'. Also the lyrics 'Then I saw the minibar, and I was like Rarr, Somebody terrorized it' have been visually recreated be showing a mini-bar disappear through stock motion. The story is created very well, the extent follows the narrative extremely well. The first scene in the hotel room leading onto scenes in the night club 'Amnesia'. The visuals have also been created through the lyrics 'Two minutes later, I'm at the bar, doing shots of Jäger' which physically show taking shot of Jagermister. This shows the audioence a visual recreation of the events which make the video and song more creditable.
The stars image in the video is very important as the storyline is the main focus, this video presents the star has very lively who enjoys to drink and party, very typical for this type of genre. This video does promote the artists group 'Boy better know' through a t shirt laying on the bed. Also this video displays the star as rather wealthy as It shows him in a luxury hotel over looking the sea.
The cinematography in this video is very similar to others but it has excessive a ellipsis throughout the day and the night before. An Iphone which has photo's on is used very cleverly for transitions through time. The camera behaves a lot differently in the night club as steady cam is used, this is to show the audience the vibe of the club. The mise en scene very much follows the narrative of the lyrics location wise.
This video is illustrative as it shows the scenes the lyrics are referring to, giving the audience a visually accurate creation of the night before, however some of the video is disjunctive as some scenes have nothing to do with the extent or narrative, such as the cutaways to men riding quad bikes. She' is a spooky alternative Hip-Hop ballad by Tyler, The Creator and featuring Frank Ocean, the video is directed by Tyler, The Creator under his alter-ego title; Wolf Haley. 'She' is separated into two main verses performed by Tyler, the creator, and the chorus is performed by Frank Ocean.
'She' shows a strong relationship between lyrics and visuals creating synaesthesia. While the visuals portray a storyline, the lyrics act as a narrative. The video is directed cleverly showing the two artists featuring on the track as characters each showing different stories, Frank Ocean playing a neighbour with a keen interest in the female who is fended off by Tyler, The Creator's character Wolf Haley who sadistically stalks the female. Frank Ocean's character is introduced first as he watches the female moving in to her new house as they share eye contact, "New girl moved on the block", Frank Ocean's lyric which sets off the storyline of his interest in her. Another set of lyrics that create synaesthesia are "A real ninja with the blade and the mask", Frank Ocean explains Wolf Haley's appearance at the window and then leaves the video; introducing the video's next chapter. The female climbs back into her bed and falls asleep as Wolf Haley is now standing at her bedside, he walks around the room while stalking her before his lyric "Meet me by the lake" is said while he visually writes the same thing on her mirror.

In this video the image that the star is creating is fiction within the video which which is a stalker, his consists of a supreme skate hoodie and a balaclava, However this changes, so that Wolf Haley is wearing his casual clothing, featured in his other video 'Yonkers'. Also the use of eye contacts have also been used to create a 'non human' look which fits in with the dark lyrical content.
The cinematography used is in a music video is very typical to a video trying to convey a story, although one shot I found interesting is the cycling scene. As the boys cycle the use of steady cam is used to show their ruthless behaviour, corresponding the girls which is a still, steady shot. The mise en scene stays in narrative within the story line, set in an urban environment and near a lake. The lighting mainly is to represent lighting, adding a creepy addition to the setting corresponding the eerie lyrics. This music video is amplifed, as the meaning of the song are added to the meaning of the lyrics such as 'Meet me by the lake', the next scene was near a lake. However this also illustrative as it show's dark scenes such as thundering and lighting to match the genre. Also it expresses the difference between genders while cycling, this is not mentioned within the lyrics of the song.

This is good, appropriate analysis, but:
ReplyDelete1. you have misused the idea of synaesthesia - discuss with me.
2. you need to refer to Goodwin by name and apply some of his ideas - again, discuss with me if you like.
